The Palm ReaderA perfume cloud so heavy
It feels like it will smother me.
Hypnotic, sweet and sweaty
And meant to trigger memory.  "Come, my dear; please take a seat."
Her cadence draws in steady beat.
A tender note hangs on the air,
Lingers there and lifts my hair.  Upon plush cushion I should sit.
Her hands clutch mine, exploring it.
Clammy fingers walk my palm,
Aged and cold, as if embalmed.  My mouth dries out and leaves behind
A tart metal twang of a nasty kind.
The cologned air seasons the base.
Nervousness is an acquired taste.  The palm reader's hair curtains her eyes
As she's hunched forward in profound thought.
